A historic address

Today, while the Maison has 17 Parisian boutiques (including 10 locations shared with its sister, Stohrer, Paris’s oldest pastry shop), it all began at the historic shop on the Faubourg Montmartre in 1761. The birthplace of the history of Paris’s oldest chocolate shop, it was with this establishment, taken over more than twenty years ago by the Dolfi family, that the “preservation” adventure of French chocolate and confectionery heritage began. Among the hundreds of the Maison’s chocolate recipes and specialties are the famous praline rochers, Folies de l’Écureuil, chocolate spread, Florentines, and the iconic Palets Montmartre.

Founded in 1761 on the rue du Faubourg Montmartre by a young grocer from Coulommiers, the shop became the home of the “Mère de Famille” when it returned to Marie-Adélaïde Bridault at the very beginning of the 19th century. As the second wife of one of Pierre-Jean Bernard’s sons-in-law, who took over the business upon his husband’s death in 1807 and was left alone with her four children, she brought unprecedented renown to the shop.

In the heart of this fashionable neighborhood, favored by writers and artists, the thriving shop gradually specialized in chocolate while offering a wide range of confectionery, eventually becoming an essential place for passing down its heritage. The Bridaults, then the Lecœurs, the Dreuxes, the Legrands, the Brethonneaus, Mr. Neveu, and finally the Dolfis, from one family to the next, blending time-honored craftsmanship with gourmet innovation, number 35 has become the guardian of French confectionery heritage and continues to evolve, gradually becoming a renowned chocolate shop. Intact since the end of the 19th century, the historic shop and its authentic charm remain a unique place filled with emotion.

À la Mère de Famille celebrates its 265th anniversary.

A rarity in the Parisian landscape, this historic boutique has never changed its address or line of business since 1761. The years go by, the furniture takes on a patina, but the enthusiasm and passion remain intact. And our partnership with Stohrer is a fruitful one! Since their partnership began in 2017, these two Parisian institutions of fine dining have continued to provide us with countless reasons to celebrate. Of our current 17 locations, 10 boutiques now offer chocolates and cakes.
