Your Proustian madeleine?
French version: the smell of coffee and toast generously spread with salted butter.
Chinese version: hot soy milk in a bowl with a Chinese doughnut called you tiao.
Your favorite family (besides your own and ours)?
The Von Trapps in The Sound of Music. The children know all the songs by heart.
Where do you go for lunch as a family?
In Paris, to ‘Pizza Chic’.
Or, in Bordeaux, to the Le Noailles brasserie for oysters, calf’s liver, and lemon/strawberry meringue tart.
In Milan, to ‘Antica trattoria della pesa’—their Milanese risotto is the best in the world!
What does a family snack time look like at your house?
A little feast: far breton, chocolate cake and salted butter, chestnut cream cake, and always Icelandic cinnamon pancakes filled with whipped cream—a recipe from my Icelandic mother-in-law.
A real blast with the children?
We tend to the vegetable garden, get lost in the vineyards with our eight dogs, and paint. And the girls have invented a game called ‘London’: they make little suitcases, pretend to be very chic mothers going on a trip to London, and I make them scones in a little imaginary ‘Ritz’.
A recipe you can whip up in no time?
Pasta with walnuts, sage, Parmesan, and brown butter. The sage leaves are crispy. It’s delicious. And then my roast chicken with Jura wine sauce.
How do they spoil you?
When the children and my husband prepare a ‘royal’ breakfast for me in bed! And then baby Lucian’s smiles—he’s eight months old.
They make a big fuss when…?
When there’s no iPad, no movie, no sweets, no ice cream. Oh dear, oh dear!!
A favorite product from À la Mère de Famille?
Easter eggs and the chocolate spread.
A gift for À la Mère de Famille for her 256th birthday?
Beautiful Italian Art Deco cups for hot chocolate.
As Annie Cordy said in Cho Kakao, if I give you chocolate, what will you give me?
Big kisses.
